As part of the Gratitude Series, this is a piece titled something nice, but it’s about nostalgia, discovering new parts of yourself through discovering others.
As I continue to work through organising closets and storage rooms in my childhood home, I keep unearthing forgotten family items from decades ago.
Today I came across old clothes that belonged to my late dad. As soon as I touched his soft sweater and I smelled its scent, all the memories came flooding back.
I spent the day romantically nostalgic of all the good times, reminiscing with colleagues who knew him on his funny habits, his bon-vivant attitude and his industrious nature.
My dad was an imposing and challenging figure at home, and so there were many aspects of his existence I couldn’t see while growing up, partly due to my lack of maturity and the limited dimensions of his life we got at home.
Today I got to different sides of him that I didn’t know existed and I’m grateful I got the opportunity to add to the complex painting of my dad’s memories in my heart.
